Deployment
Knoxville set up in a powerful blocking position with an unpassable ridge to its left and good hills in the center and on the right and forest covering the far right to prevent being flanked
It also forced a large part of the Kingsport force to have their back to the Powell river.
With a good blocking deployment Knoxville allowed Kingsport to make the first move.
The bulk of both forces cavalry was on the Knoxville right and correspondingly the Kingsport left. Kingsport took advantage of having an extra unit of horse and placed it on their right and this would prove to make a difference.
Kingsport started out with a prob on the Knoxville left and got shot up for the attempt
Knoxville seeing the effectiveness of their position simply held and repulsed move after mover from Kingsport but it was taking a toll. The Knoxville left did take heavy losses and slowly began to falter.
Knoxville’s guns did have a good effect and made Kingsport pay the price
On the Knoxville right Kingsport pushed up with their heavy horse and were repulsed. The Knoxville cavalry did a great job but again they were slowly pushed back.
The two telling events that determined the battle was the Kingsport light cavalry on the Knoxville left forcing a unit of light infantry in to square and then the Kingsport artillery went to work.
The second thing was a bayonet charge that broke two Knoxville units. One on the right of the line and one on the left.
With losses mounting and then having both ends of the line in enemy hands Knoxville felt it was time to with draw. Because of the losses to the Kingsport cavalry and the Knoxville cavalry still being a dangerous threat Kingsport allowed Knoxville to leave with no immediate pursuit.
The biggest issues.
Knoxville had their grenadier company wiped out and the lost of that elite unit has shaken some of the forces
Kingsport took considerable losses to their heavy cavalry. One company was reduced to ½ strength
